Social media detox refers to a deliberate period during which an individual abstains from using social media platforms. Generally, the goal of a social media detox is to reduce stress, anxiety, and the negative effects associated with excessive or mindless use of social media.
How long does it take to detox from social media?
Detox from social media could last a few days, a week, or even longer, depending on individual preferences and goals.
My Social Media Detox Journey
Except for the blog social media accounts, I have deactivated my personal Facebook account for many years now. I also don’t have a personal Instagram account, and since I haven’t been active on Twitter, to begin with, there isn’t much unplugging to talk about when it comes to it.
My decision to do a social media detox stemmed from several reasons, some of which are:
- It’s time-consuming. Mindless scrolling of my feed takes a lot of time.
- A waste of time. I believe my spare time is better spent elsewhere where I’m productive. I’m not learning much when I’m scrolling through my news feed. I’m not being creative either. All I’m getting are updates on other people’s lives, which I don’t need to be aware of since most of them aren’t close to me anyway.
- Not good for mental health. People on social media only pick and choose what they share, and most of what makes it to your news feed are the perfect, beautiful versions. These curated contents do not provide the whole picture, but only the shiny part they want you to see, which is rather misleading. They give off the erroneous impression that they are having such perfect lives when that is far from the truth. Because who’s living the perfect life, right? Nuh-uh. This is not good for my self-esteem or my general mental health. Ergo, deactivating is the key.
Doing that social media detox has been good for me. It has allowed me to focus my energy and time on people and things that matter. It has given me clarity and awareness of myself, my loved ones, and my surroundings.
So I’ll keep up with my social media detox endeavor, and these quotes will inspire me to keep going. I hope they’ll inspire and help you too in your quest to free yourself from the shackles of social media and thus reclaim your life.

I’m sure social media detox is helping a lot to all those who chose it to do. For me, it aided me in reconnecting with what actually needs to connected with. It’s been 3 months since I escaped from social media, and I’m doing far better without it. All this flaunting posts, stories made me anixious leading to ignorance of my abilities and capabilities. Now that that I’ve restablished my bond with the what I overlooked before, I’ve realised that there’s more to do in this life than this virtual world. More self-time and introspection could let you unravel the mysteries of this world.
