Skin care is essential for a healthy, glowing complexion. It is also a must if you want to look younger, or at least, not look beyond your age.
The first step to developing the correct skincare routine is to know what skin care products you need.
If you’re just starting with your skin care regimen, here are the skin care products you need to have that vibrant skin.

1. Cleanser
You need to clean your face with a cleanser twice a day, once in the morning and then in the evening.
In the morning, a water-based cleanser is usually enough. An example of a water-based cleanser is a foaming facial wash that removes dirt and sweat from your face.
In the evening, you might need to use an oil-based cleanser in addition to a water-based one if you’re using sunscreen or makeup during the day. Sunscreen and makeup are oil-based so a water cleanser alone will not work as oil and water repel each other. An oil-based cleanser does a better job of removing these products and the sebum from your face. Plus, it does not strip away your face’s natural oils.
2. Exfoliants
Exfoliants are products that help remove dead skin cells. Examples are facial scrubs, sponges and salicylic acids. Exfoliating with exfoliants helps prevent acne, clears up the complexion, and enables facial products to go through the skin better.
The number of times you need to exfoliate depends on your skin type. Those with sensitive skin sometimes do not need to, or infrequently, exfoliate as it causes irritation to the skin. Exfoliating for those who have oily skin, however, produces good results.
It’s best to experiment at first to see how your skin would react to exfoliating. Do it gradually, starting with once a week and then increasing it to twice or thrice a week once you see how your skin responds to exfoliating.
3. Toner
Toners provide many benefits. They act as secondary cleansers by removing excess oil, stubborn dirt and impurities that your cleanser couldn’t take off. They’re known to balance the pH of the skin after cleansing. They minimize and tighten pores. Toners also prepare the skin for the succeeding skin care products you need to apply like serums and moisturizers.
Many toners in the market today also address specific skin concerns like excess oil or dryness. Toners for dry skin, for instance, have ingredients that add moisture to the skin to target that particular concern. The toner I’m using has anti-wrinkle ingredients that prevent or minimize lines and creases.
Toners are usually applied twice a day and each time after washing your face with a cleanser. But if you’re new to it, you can test out how your skin will react by applying it once a day at first then gradually increase to twice a day if you see that your skin is adapting well and showing good results.
To apply, just soak a cotton pad with a good amount and wipe it on your face. Or, just like what I do, you can opt to skip the cotton pad by adding a few drops directly to your palm and dabbing them on your face.
I love using a toner because it makes my pores smaller such that they’re barely visible so my skin has a smoother finish afterward.
4. Essence
Essences are water-based solutions that provide hydration and prepare the skin’s absorption of serums and moisturizers. They’re like makeup primers that help the skin absorb these products.
Some skip this step but you can always include it in your skincare routine.

5. Serums
Serums are facial solutions that target specific skin concerns like acne or fine lines. They have thicker, more viscous consistency than essences and have a high amount of active ingredients so they are more effective in treating particular skin concerns and delivering results.
This ability to target specific skin concerns and deliver better results faster distinguishes a serum from a moisturizer. Moisturizers are generally concerned with hydrating the skin and do not treat particular skin issues like blemishes or wrinkles.
Serums come after essences and before moisturizers in your skincare routine.
6. Eye Cream
Eye creams are for the thin, delicate skin around the eyes that treat dark circles, fine lines and puffiness.
7. Moisturizer
Moisturizers hydrate the skin and bind it, helping nutrients and moisture penetrate and stay inside. They also protect the skin from external pollutants and prevent blemishes from developing.
8. Sunscreen
Sunscreen is important in protecting your skin from the harmful rays of the sun. Apply it before going out for the day.
9. Sheet Mask
Sheet masks are papers drenched with vitamins and nutrients that you put on your face for about 20 minutes. You don’t need to put them on daily, just once or a couple of times a week.
Other Skin Care Products
There are other skin care products that you can choose to apply on your face too like a face mist. A face mist is not essential to your skin care routine, but it provides benefits too, like hydration and better face product absorption and retention.
The Long and Short
Skin care is important and these are the basic products to jumpstart your own skin care routine. When deciding which to use, consider your skin type, what it needs, and what works best for it.
