Do jade rollers work? That is the question that first sprang to mind the moment I saw these little… thingies doing their rounds on my Instagram feed.

Every girl seems to have one and can’t stop raving about how it’s the greatest beauty tool or something of the sort.
Hmm…
I was a bit skeptical about the whole thing, to be honest. I mean, don’t they look quite tiny, a tad too pretty, and a bit… trivial to produce the great results they claim to have? Like slow aging, for starters?
Nah.
So I put jade rollers at the back of my mind and eventually forgot about them.
But then some months later while trying to use up an Amazon Gift Card I had, I thought of jade rollers again. I couldn’t think of anything else to buy with the remaining 18 or so dollars left on my card, so after seeing a 4.6 out of 5 rating out of more than 40,000 reviews and reading a number of favorable testimonies for this jade roller, I caved in–add to my cart it was then.
But first, the basics…

What Exactly is a Jade Roller?
What is a jade roller? According to my research, jade rollers are beauty tools that have been around for ages. It was used in ancient China as part of their beauty ritual as jade is believed to have healing properties. Some claim this practice dates back to as early as the seventh century while others say it wasn’t only until the Qing Dynasty (seventeenth century) that it came about. Regardless, it is said to help with blood circulation, swelling minimization, and product absorption, to name a few.
While jade is commonly used as rollers, rose quartzes are oftentimes utilized as well since they’re said to produce the same results.
Jade Roller and Gua Sha
The roller I ordered came with a Gua Sha and an instruction manual in a nice, sturdy box.
It was in pink, which means I got one in rose quartz.
The Gua Sha–the heart-shaped stone above–is something I didn’t expect to see. My bad since I clearly didn’t read the product description very well, heh.
Anyhow, I was glad to see the Gua Sha, which, I’ve learned, is also a massage tool. It can also be used on the face and on the body.
The instruction manual is satisfying enough to contain information for using the products from the get-go.
How I Used My Jade Roller
So I did my rolling diligently for a couple of nights after I got my roller.
I would start after I’m done with my skincare routine or after I’ve applied all my skin care products to my face. I would roll it on my face in an outward motion (from the inside of the face to the outside) for at least forty minutes (sometimes more) while reading a book or watching my dramas.
I used it on my neck too, similarly rolling it from inner part to outer part.
It feels nice to the face because the stone is quite cold, especially at the start. The rolling motion is calming and relaxing that oftentimes I forget I’ve been rolling for an hour already.
You can make the roller cooler by putting it in the fridge for a few minutes before using it.
The Gua Sha I’ve used for massaging my back and legs. I find that they’re more effective than when I just use my hands.
Jade Roller After
To the question “do jade rollers work?”, here are my findings:
Two things I’ve noticed after those two nights: my face got less puffy and my allergic rhinitis eased up.
When I say my face got less puffy, I mean it got slimmer or smaller, and more contoured, I think.
I have allergic rhinitis and most of the time I have trouble sneezing which is not good since sneezing helps unclog my pathways. After using my roller, I sneeze more often than before, so then I can breathe easier.
Rolling the stone over my face is also a great way to get a facial massage. And just like facial massages do, it gave my face more glow afterwards.
So do jade rollers work? I can say they do. I’ve seen good results, enough to say that they’re quite amazing. I consider mine one of the most useful and beneficial things I bought that I now can’t live without–cheesy, but true.
